Type 1 Excludes
These terms are the conditions for which that code is to be used. The terms may be synonyms of the code title, or, in the case of "other specified" codes, the terms are a list of the various conditions assigned to that code. The inclusion terms are not necessarily exhaustive. Additional terms found only in the Alphabetic Index may also be assigned to a code.
A type 1 excludes note is a pure excludes note. It means "NOT CODED HERE!" An Excludes1 note indicates that the code excluded should never be used at the same time as the code above the Excludes1 note. An Excludes1 is used when two conditions cannot occur together, such as a congenital form versus an acquired form of the same condition.

Clinical InformationClinical
Folic Acid Deficiency
a nutritional condition produced by a deficiency of folic acid in the diet. many plant and animal tissues contain folic acid, abundant in green leafy vegetables, yeast, liver, and mushrooms but destroyed by long-term cooking. alcohol interferes with its intermediate metabolism and absorption. folic acid deficiency may develop in long-term anticonvulsant therapy or with use of oral contraceptives. this deficiency causes anemia, macrocytic anemia, and megaloblastic anemia. it is indistinguishable from vitamin b 12 deficiency in peripheral blood and bone marrow findings, but the neurologic lesions seen in b 12 deficiency do not occur. (merck manual, 16th ed)Choline Deficiency
a condition produced by a deficiency of choline in animals. choline is known as a lipotropic agent because it has been shown to promote the transport of excess fat from the liver under certain conditions in laboratory animals. combined deficiency of choline (included in the b vitamin complex) and all other methyl group donors causes liver cirrhosis in some animals. unlike compounds normally considered as vitamins, choline does not serve as a cofactor in enzymatic reactions. (from saunders dictionary & encyclopedia of laboratory medicine and technology, 1984)Folic Acid
a member of the vitamin b family that stimulates the hematopoietic system. it is present in the liver and kidney and is found in mushrooms, spinach, yeast, green leaves, and grasses (poaceae). folic acid is used in the treatment and prevention of folate deficiencies and megaloblastic anemia.Choline
a basic constituent of lecithin that is found in many plants and animal organs. it is important as a precursor of acetylcholine, as a methyl donor in various metabolic processes, and in lipid metabolism.

Questions About E53.8Overview
Is E53.8 (Deficiency of other B group vitamins) a billable code?
Yes. This is a billable ICD-10-CM code, specific enough to report deficiency of other specified B group vitamins on HIPAA-covered claims from October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026.
What MS-DRG does E53.8 group to?
When deficiency of other specified B group vitamins is the principal diagnosis on an inpatient stay, it groups to MS-DRG 640, 641, with relative weights from 0.7782 to 1.3356 depending on complications. Higher weights mean higher Medicare reimbursement.
What is the ICD-9 equivalent of E53.8?
Under the General Equivalence Mappings, deficiency of other specified B group vitamins converts to ICD-9-CM 266.2 (b-complex defic NEC). The mapping is approximate, so confirm the match fits the documentation.
Footnotes
[1] Not chronic - A diagnosis code that does not fit the criteria for chronic condition (duration, ongoing medical treatment, and limitations) is considered not chronic. Some codes designated as not chronic are acute conditions. Other diagnosis codes that indicate a possible chronic condition, but for which the duration of the illness is not specified in the code description (i.e., we do not know the condition has lasted 12 months or longer) also are considered not chronic.
