What Is ICD List?

ICD List is a free reference for the medical code sets used in the United States healthcare system. On October 1, 2015, ICD-10 replaced ICD-9 as the mandatory HIPAA code set for diagnosis and inpatient procedure coding, one of the largest data transitions in U.S. healthcare history. We've published the complete, current code sets since that transition, and our archive reaches back to the releases that preceded it.

Two agencies maintain the codes. The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) maintains the ICD-10-CM diagnosis classification, and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) maintains the ICD-10-PCS procedure coding system. Both follow the federal fiscal year: each release takes effect on October 1 and stays valid through September 30 of the following year. The code sets on ICD List today are the FY 2026 versions, effective October 1, 2025 – September 30, 2026.

Beyond the codes themselves, the site includes the reference material that gets used with them: lookup tools with medical synonym matching, the Index to Diseases and Injuries, the Tables of Drugs and Neoplasms, MS-DRG groupers, Medicare Code Edits, POA exempt lists, the official coding guidelines, and ICD-9 to ICD-10 converters. Everything is free, with no account and no paywall.

Our audience is anyone who works with these codes: medical coders and billers, insurance and health information staff, clinicians, students, and patients trying to understand a code on their own paperwork.

How Our Data Works

ICD-10 data isn't published in one place. The code files come from CMS and NCHS, clinical classifications come from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and much of the vocabulary behind our search tools comes from the National Library of Medicine. ICD List brings these official government sources together into a single, convenient reference, so billers, insurance staff, healthcare professionals, and the general public can find ICD data without pulling flat files from agency websites.

Data pipeline
  1. The agencies publish. CMS and NCHS release the official fiscal-year code files ahead of each October 1 effective date, along with mid-year addenda when issued.
  2. ICD List collects and validates. Each release is loaded into our database and reconciled against the official record totals before it goes live.
  3. The data becomes browsable. Codes, guidelines, edits, DRG groupings, and conversion mappings are cross-linked so related information appears together on one page instead of in separate government files.

Everything traces back to the official releases, so the code data on this site says what the agencies published. If you spot something that doesn't match the official files, contact us with the page URL. We check every report against the original release and correct confirmed discrepancies in the next data refresh, starting with anything that affects code validity or billable status.

ICD List is independent. We're not affiliated with CMS, NCHS, the World Health Organization, or any payer or certification body. The site is free and supported by advertising, which pays for the servers, data processing, and ongoing development. Advertisers have no influence over the data we publish.

ICD List Update History

The code sets change every year. Codes are added, revised, and deleted with each fiscal-year release, and an outdated reference is a real liability in this field. The tables below document every annual release in the ICD List database, with the total codes loaded and the net change from the prior year.

ICD-10-CM became the mandatory HIPAA code set on October 1, 2015 (FY 2016). The earliest releases in our archive are the pre-implementation versions published while the CMS partial code freeze was in effect, which is why totals stayed unchanged until regular annual updates resumed. Totals reflect the complete tabular code set as loaded in the ICD List database, including non-billable header categories. The change column is the net difference from the prior release, additions minus deletions.
