What are ICD-10-PCS codes used for?
ICD-10-PCS is the procedure coding system for hospital inpatient stays in the United States. Facilities report PCS codes on inpatient claims, and together with the ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes they drive the MS-DRG payment assignment. Physician and outpatient procedures are reported with CPT codes instead, so the same operation can have both a PCS code and a CPT code depending on the setting.
How is an ICD-10-PCS code different from a CPT code?
Both describe procedures, but they belong to different systems. ICD-10-PCS is maintained by CMS, has seven characters, and is required on hospital inpatient claims. CPT is maintained by the AMA, has five digits, and is used for physician services and outpatient facility billing. If you are coding an inpatient hospital stay, you need PCS.
How do I read a 7-character PCS code?
Each position is an axis of classification. In 0FT44ZZ: section 0 (Medical and Surgical), body system F (Hepatobiliary System and Pancreas), root operation T (Resection), body part 4 (Gallbladder), approach 4 (Percutaneous Endoscopic), device Z (none), qualifier Z (none). The first three characters name the table, so a partial search like 0FT lists the whole family.
Why does a result say Not Valid for Submission?
It is a table header, a 3 to 6 character grouping like 0FT4 that organizes the complete codes beneath it. Inpatient claims require the full 7-character code. Use the Valid for Submission Only filter to hide the headers, or open a header to see every complete code it contains.
How do I find a code when I only know the procedure name?
Type the name the way clinicians say it: bronchoscopy, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, partial hip replacement. Every code carries the vocabulary of its official CMS crosswalk to ICD-9 procedure codes and its AHRQ clinical category, so common procedure names match even though PCS descriptions use root operation language instead (a bronchoscopy is officially an Inspection of the Tracheobronchial Tree). When a code matches this way, the matching term is shown under the official description. If an abbreviation such as TAVR returns nothing, search the spelled-out procedure name.
