About Chapter 5
Mental and behavioral disorders include conditions linked to known physical conditions or substance use, as well as disorders involving mood, behavior and development.
The blocks first separate disorders linked to known physical conditions from those linked to psychoactive substance use. Another block groups schizophrenia, schizotypal and delusional disorders apart from mood disorders. Anxiety, stress-related and other nonpsychotic disorders form a separate block.
The remaining blocks distinguish behavioral conditions associated with physical factors, adult personality and behavior disorders, intellectual disabilities, and developmental disorders. They also separate behavioral and emotional disorders that usually begin in childhood or adolescence from an unspecified mental disorder.
FY 2027 changes: The FY 2027 ICD-10-CM update, effective October 1, 2026, added 1 code in this chapter.
