A80.0 is a billable ICD-10-CM diagnosis code for acute paralytic poliomyelitis, vaccine-associated. It is valid on HIPAA claims for fiscal year 2027 (October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027) and groups to MS-DRG 23 through 24, 97 through 99. As a secondary diagnosis, it counts as a major complication or comorbidity (MCC) and places an inpatient stay in the highest severity level of its MS-DRG family. It does not count, however, when the principal diagnosis is one of 5 closely related codes. Coders also document this condition as acute paralytic poliomyelitis. In AHRQ's Clinical Classifications Software (CCSR), this diagnosis falls under Other specified CNS infection and poliomyelitis and Viral infection.

  • Poliomyelitis

an acute infectious disease of humans, particularly children, caused by any of three serotypes of human poliovirus (poliovirus). usually the infection is limited to the gastrointestinal tract and nasopharynx, and is often asymptomatic. the central nervous system, primarily the spinal cord, may be affected, leading to rapidly progressive paralysis, coarse fasciculation and hyporeflexia. motor neurons are primarily affected. encephalitis may also occur. the virus replicates in the nervous system, and may cause significant neuronal loss, most notably in the spinal cord. a rare related condition, nonpoliovirus poliomyelitis, may result from infections with nonpoliovirus enteroviruses. Polio and Post-Polio Syndrome

Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a disease that spreads from person to person. It is caused by the poliovirus. The virus attacks the nervous system. In serious cases, it can cause paralysis (where you can't move parts of the body). The paralysis may be lifelong and can sometimes be life-threatening.

Questions About A80.0Overview

What is the ICD-10 code for acute paralytic poliomyelitis, vaccine-associated?

The ICD-10-CM code for acute paralytic poliomyelitis, vaccine-associated is A80.0 (sometimes written as A800). It is billable on HIPAA-covered claims from October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027.

Is A80.0 (Acute poliomyelitis) a billable code?

Yes. This is a billable ICD-10-CM code, specific enough to report acute paralytic poliomyelitis, vaccine-associated on HIPAA-covered claims from October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027.

What MS-DRG does A80.0 group to?

When acute paralytic poliomyelitis, vaccine-associated is the principal diagnosis on an inpatient stay, it groups to MS-DRG 24, 98, 99, 23, 97, with relative weights from 1.5249 to 5.7422 depending on complications. Higher weights mean higher Medicare reimbursement.

Is A80.0 a CC or MCC?

CMS lists A80.0 as an MCC (major complication or comorbidity) for FY 2027. Reported as a secondary diagnosis, it places the inpatient stay in the highest-weighted DRG of its severity family. It does not count when the principal diagnosis is one of the 5 closely related codes in its exclusion list.

Can A80.0 be reported with G04.82?

Not as a rule. The Excludes1 note at A80, which applies to A80.0, lists "acute flaccid myelitis (G04.82)". An Excludes1 note means the excluded code is never reported together with this one; the only exception is when the two conditions are unrelated to each other (Official Guidelines, Section I.A.12.a).
