Chapter Coding Notes
Note: This chapter permits the classification of environmental events and circumstances as the cause of injury, and other adverse effects. Where a code from this section is applicable, it is intended that it shall be used secondary to a code from another chapter of the Classification indicating the nature of the condition. Most often, the condition will be classifiable to Chapter 19, Injury, poisoning and certain other consequences of external causes (S00-T88). Other conditions that may be stated to be due to external causes are classified in Chapters I to XVIII. For these conditions, codes from Chapter 20 should be used to provide additional information as to the cause of the condition.

About Chapter 20
External causes describe events and circumstances linked to injury, illness, or death. The chapter separates accidents from intentional self-harm, assault, events of undetermined intent, legal intervention, war, military operations, terrorism, and medical care complications.
Accidents divide into transport accidents and other accidental injuries. Transport groups distinguish pedestrians and riders from occupants of different vehicles, then separate other land, water, air, and space transport. Other accidental injuries include falls, mechanical forces, drowning, exposure to electricity or fire, forces of nature, and overexertion.
Medical care complications divide into misadventures during care, adverse incidents involving medical devices, and reactions or later complications attributed to procedures. A separate group describes supplementary factors related to causes of illness classified elsewhere. Where an encounter character is listed, A means initial encounter, D means subsequent encounter, and S means sequela, a later effect.
