About the X00–X08 Code Range
Smoke, flames, and fires can expose people to heat or smoke. Burning structures can also collapse or lead to falls, jumps, or injuries from falling objects.
The fire categories first separate uncontrolled from controlled fires, then distinguish fires inside buildings or structures from those outside them. X00 and X02 describe fires in structures; X01 and X03 describe fires elsewhere. Their subdivisions distinguish smoke and flames from events such as falls or being hit by an object.
X04 concerns highly flammable material catching fire. X05 concerns nightwear catching fire or melting, while X06 separates plastic jewelry from other clothing and distinguishes catching fire from melting. X08 includes bed, sofa, and other furniture fires. The ending letter distinguishes initial encounters (A), subsequent encounters (D), and sequelae (S), meaning later effects.
