Assault by sharp object (X99)

The ICD-10 code X99 series is used to classify injuries resulting from assault by sharp objects. These codes specify the type of sharp weapon involved, such as glass, knives, swords or daggers, and other sharp instruments, to provide precise documentation for medical and legal purposes.

Codes like X99.0 denote assault by sharp glass, commonly referred to as assault by cutting or assault with broken glass or bottle. Similarly, X99.1 covers assaults by knife, including stabbing with various types of knives, while X99.2 refers to assault by sword or dagger. The category X99.8 captures assaults by other sharp objects, which may include razor blades, axes, screws, or even injection needles. The X99.9 codes are used when the sharp object is unspecified but still involves cutting or stabbing actions commonly described as homicidal cuts, stabbings, or wounds from cutting instruments. Each code further distinguishes encounters by initial treatment, follow-ups, or sequelae to guide healthcare providers and coders in accurate reporting of injury circumstances.

Instructional Notations

Type 1 Excludes

A type 1 excludes note is a pure excludes note. It means "NOT CODED HERE!" An Excludes1 note indicates that the code excluded should never be used at the same time as the code above the Excludes1 note. An Excludes1 is used when two conditions cannot occur together, such as a congenital form versus an acquired form of the same condition.

7th Character Note

Certain ICD-10-CM categories have applicable 7th characters. The applicable 7th character is required for all codes within the category, or as the notes in the Tabular List instruct. The 7th character must always be the 7th character in the data field. If a code that requires a 7th character is not 6 characters, a placeholder X must be used to fill in the empty characters.

  • The appropriate 7th character is to be added to each code from category X99
