Code Navigator:

T65.893A is a billable diagnosis code used to specify a medical diagnosis of toxic effect of other specified substances, assault, initial encounter. The code is valid during the current fiscal year for the submission of HIPAA-covered transactions from October 01, 2024 through September 30, 2025.

T65.893A is an initial encounter code, includes a 7th character and should be used while the patient is receiving active treatment for a condition like toxic effect of other specified substances assault. According to ICD-10-CM Guidelines an "initial encounter" doesn't necessarily means "initial visit". The 7th character should be used when the patient is undergoing active treatment regardless if new or different providers saw the patient over the course of a treatment. The appropriate 7th character codes should also be used even if the patient delayed seeking treatment for a condition.

Approximate Synonyms

The following list of clinical terms are approximate synonyms, alternative descriptions, or common phrases that might be used by patients, healthcare providers, or medical coders to describe the same condition. These synonyms and related diagnosis terms are often used when searching for an ICD-10 code, especially when the exact medical terminology is unclear. Whether you're looking for lay terms, similar diagnosis names, or common language alternatives, this list can help guide you to the correct ICD-10 classification.

  • Injury due to biological warfare
  • Injury due to poison gas weapon
  • War injury caused by chemical
  • War injury due to biological warfare
  • War injury due to gases, fumes and chemicals

Clinical Classification

Clinical Classifications group individual ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes into broader, clinically meaningful categories. These categories help simplify complex data by organizing related conditions under common clinical themes.

They are especially useful for data analysis, reporting, and clinical decision-making. Even when diagnosis codes differ, similar conditions can be grouped together based on their clinical relevance. Each category is assigned a unique CCSR code that represents a specific clinical concept, often tied to a body system or medical specialty.

External cause codes: intent of injury, assault

CCSR Code: EXT022

Inpatient Default: N - Not default inpatient assignment for principal diagnosis or first-listed diagnosis.

Outpatient Default: N - Not default outpatient assignment for principal diagnosis or first-listed diagnosis.

External cause codes: poisoning by non-drug

CCSR Code: EXT015

Inpatient Default: N - Not default inpatient assignment for principal diagnosis or first-listed diagnosis.

Outpatient Default: N - Not default outpatient assignment for principal diagnosis or first-listed diagnosis.

Toxic effects, initial encounter

CCSR Code: INJ023

Inpatient Default: Y - Yes, default inpatient assignment for principal diagnosis or first-listed diagnosis.

Outpatient Default: Y - Yes, default outpatient assignment for principal diagnosis or first-listed diagnosis.

Clinical Information

  • Acrylamide

a colorless, odorless, highly water soluble vinyl monomer formed from the hydration of acrylonitrile. it is primarily used in research laboratories for electrophoresis, chromatography, and electron microscopy and in the sewage and wastewater treatment industries.
  • Acrylamides

colorless, odorless crystals that are used extensively in research laboratories for the preparation of polyacrylamide gels for electrophoresis and in organic synthesis, and polymerization. some of its polymers are used in sewage and wastewater treatment, permanent press fabrics, and as soil conditioning agents.
  • Acrylonitrile

a highly poisonous compound used widely in the manufacture of plastics, adhesives and synthetic rubber.
  • Epoxide Hydrolases

enzymes that catalyze reversibly the formation of an epoxide or arene oxide from a glycol or aromatic diol, respectively.
  • Styrene

a colorless, toxic liquid with a strong aromatic odor. it is used to make rubbers, polymers and copolymers, and polystyrene plastics.
  • Styrenes

derivatives and polymers of styrene. they are used in the manufacturing of synthetic rubber, plastics, and resins. some of the polymers form the skeletal structures for ion exchange resin beads.

Coding Guidelines

The appropriate 7th character is to be added to each code from block Toxic effect of other and unspecified substances (T65). Use the following options for the aplicable episode of care:

  • A - initial encounter
  • D - subsequent encounter
  • S - sequela

Convert T65.893A to ICD-9-CM

Below are the ICD-9 codes that most closely match this ICD-10 code, based on the General Equivalence Mappings (GEMs). This ICD-10 to ICD-9 crosswalk tool is helpful for coders who need to reference legacy diagnosis codes for audits, historical claims, or approximate code comparisons.

Table of Drugs and Chemicals

The parent code T65.893 of the current diagnosis code is referenced in the Table of Drugs and Chemicals, this table contains a classification of drugs, industrial solvents, corrosive gases, noxious plants, pesticides, and other toxic agents.

According to ICD-10-CM coding guidelines it is advised to do not code directly from the Table of Drugs and Chemicals, instead always refer back to the Tabular List when doing the initial coding. Each substance in the table is assigned a code according to the poisoning classification and external causes of adverse effects. It is important to use as many codes as necessary to specify all reported drugs, medicinal or chemical substances. If the same diagnosis code describes the causative agent for more than one adverse reaction, poisoning, toxic effect or underdosing, utilize the code only once.

Poisoning

A poison is any substance that is harmful to your body. You might swallow it, inhale it, inject it, or absorb it through your skin. Any substance can be poisonous if too much is taken. Poisons can include:

  • Prescription or over-the-counter medicines taken in doses that are too high
  • Overdoses of illegal drugs
  • Carbon monoxide from gas appliances
  • Household products, such as laundry powder or furniture polish
  • Pesticides
  • Indoor or outdoor plants
  • Metals such as lead and mercury

The effects of poisoning range from short-term illness to brain damage, coma, and death. To prevent poisoning it is important to use and store products exactly as their labels say. Keep dangerous products where children can't get to them. Treatment for poisoning depends on the type of poison. If you suspect someone has been poisoned, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222 right away.

Footnotes

[1] Not chronic - A diagnosis code that does not fit the criteria for chronic condition (duration, ongoing medical treatment, and limitations) is considered not chronic. Some codes designated as not chronic are acute conditions. Other diagnosis codes that indicate a possible chronic condition, but for which the duration of the illness is not specified in the code description (i.e., we do not know the condition has lasted 12 months or longer) also are considered not chronic.
