About the S00–S09 Code Range
Head injuries here range from surface injuries and open wounds to broken bones, eye injuries, and injuries inside the skull.
The categories separate S00 surface injuries from S01 open wounds. S02 identifies skull and facial bone fractures, while S03 identifies dislocations and sprains. S04 separates injuries by nerve, S05 covers eye and eye-socket injuries, and S06 separates injuries inside the skull by type. S07 covers crushing injuries, S08 covers parts of the head torn away or traumatically amputated, and S09 covers other and unspecified head injuries. Many subdivisions distinguish the affected part of the head.
The seventh character distinguishes initial encounters, subsequent encounters, and later effects. For fractures in S02, it also distinguishes initial open from closed fractures and subsequent fractures by routine healing, delayed healing, or failure to unite.
