Nicotine dependence (F17)
The ICD-10 code section F17 covers various forms of nicotine dependence, a condition characterized by addiction to nicotine from tobacco products. These codes help specify the type of nicotine use, its complications, and remission status.
This code group includes specific entries for dependence on cigarettes (F17.21), chewing tobacco (F17.22), and other tobacco products (F17.29). It also distinguishes uncomplicated cases, those with withdrawal symptoms, and those with other nicotine-induced disorders. For example, the code for nicotine dependence with withdrawal is F17.203, while remission is identified with codes like F17.201 for unspecified nicotine dependence or F17.211 for cigarette dependence in remission. Common terms such as “smoker,” “tobacco user,” or “maternal tobacco use complicating pregnancy” relate to these codes, guiding healthcare professionals and coders to the precise ICD-10 code for nicotine-related diagnoses. This section is crucial for accurate documentation of tobacco-related disorders, treatment planning, and monitoring recovery or withdrawal progress.

Instructional Notations
Type 1 Excludes
A type 1 excludes note is a pure excludes note. It means "NOT CODED HERE!" An Excludes1 note indicates that the code excluded should never be used at the same time as the code above the Excludes1 note. An Excludes1 is used when two conditions cannot occur together, such as a congenital form versus an acquired form of the same condition.
Type 2 Excludes
A type 2 excludes note represents "Not included here". An excludes2 note indicates that the condition excluded is not part of the condition represented by the code, but a patient may have both conditions at the same time. When an Excludes2 note appears under a code, it is acceptable to use both the code and the excluded code together, when appropriate.
