Other anxiety disorders (F41)
The ICD-10 code section F41 covers various other anxiety disorders beyond specific phobias and PTSD. These codes are used to identify and classify conditions like panic disorders, generalized anxiety disorder, mixed anxiety disorders, and unspecified or other specified anxiety disorders.
This section includes F41.0 for panic disorder, which is often referred to as panic attacks or episodic paroxysmal anxiety and involves sudden severe anxiety episodes. F41.1 codes generalized anxiety disorder, a condition characterized by persistent and excessive worry often called anxiety state or apprehension. F41.3 represents other mixed anxiety disorders, where symptoms overlap multiple anxiety types. The category F41.8 is used for other specified anxiety disorders, which can cover anticipatory anxiety, anxiety co-occurring with major depressive episodes, or various situational anxieties such as fear of losing control or health-related worries. Finally, F41.9 refers to unspecified anxiety disorders, including chronic or recurrent anxiety and anxiety related to pregnancy or postpartum. Healthcare providers and coders rely on these detailed codes to accurately document and treat diverse anxiety presentations using the ICD-10 code for anxiety disorders F41.
Instructional Notations
Type 2 Excludes
A type 2 excludes note represents "Not included here". An excludes2 note indicates that the condition excluded is not part of the condition represented by the code, but a patient may have both conditions at the same time. When an Excludes2 note appears under a code, it is acceptable to use both the code and the excluded code together, when appropriate.
