N16 is a billable diagnosis code used to specify a medical diagnosis of renal tubulo-interstitial disorders in diseases classified elsewhere. The code is valid during the current fiscal year for the submission of HIPAA-covered transactions from October 01, 2023 through September 30, 2024.

Approximate Synonyms

The following clinical terms are approximate synonyms or lay terms that might be used to identify the correct diagnosis code:

  • Acute nephritis due to another disorder
  • Acute tubulointerstitial nephritis
  • Acute tubulo-interstitial nephritis due to immunological disorder
  • Immunoglobulin G4 related disease
  • Immunoglobulin G4 related kidney disease
  • Pyelitis
  • Pyelitis associated with another disorder
  • Pyelonephritis associated with another disorder
  • Renal tubulo-interstitial disorder due to cystinosis
  • Renal tubulo-interstitial disorders in metabolic diseases
  • Renal tubulo-interstitial disorders in neoplastic diseases
  • Renal tubulo-interstitial disorders in systemic connective tissue disorders
  • Renal tubulo-interstitial disorders in transplant rejection

Clinical Classification

Clinical Information

  • Pyelitis

inflammation of the kidney pelvis and kidney calices where urine is collected before discharge, but does not involve the renal parenchyma (the nephrons) where urine is processed.
  • Pyelitis

    inflammation of the renal pelvis.

Tabular List of Diseases and Injuries

The following annotation back-references are applicable to this diagnosis code. The Tabular List of Diseases and Injuries is a list of ICD-10-CM codes, organized "head to toe" into chapters and sections with coding notes and guidance for inclusions, exclusions, descriptions and more.

Inclusion Terms

Inclusion Terms
These terms are the conditions for which that code is to be used. The terms may be synonyms of the code title, or, in the case of "other specified" codes, the terms are a list of the various conditions assigned to that code. The inclusion terms are not necessarily exhaustive. Additional terms found only in the Alphabetic Index may also be assigned to a code.
  • Pyelonephritis
  • Tubulo-interstitial nephritis

Code First

Code First
Certain conditions have both an underlying etiology and multiple body system manifestations due to the underlying etiology. For such conditions, the ICD-10-CM has a coding convention that requires the underlying condition be sequenced first followed by the manifestation. Wherever such a combination exists, there is a "use additional code" note at the etiology code, and a "code first" note at the manifestation code. These instructional notes indicate the proper sequencing order of the codes, etiology followed by manifestation.

Type 1 Excludes

Type 1 Excludes
A type 1 excludes note is a pure excludes note. It means "NOT CODED HERE!" An Excludes1 note indicates that the code excluded should never be used at the same time as the code above the Excludes1 note. An Excludes1 is used when two conditions cannot occur together, such as a congenital form versus an acquired form of the same condition.
  • diphtheritic pyelonephritis and tubulo-interstitial nephritis A36.84
  • pyelonephritis and tubulo-interstitial nephritis in candidiasis B37.49
  • pyelonephritis and tubulo-interstitial nephritis in cystinosis E72.04
  • pyelonephritis and tubulo-interstitial nephritis in salmonella infection A02.25
  • pyelonephritis and tubulo-interstitial nephritis in sarcoidosis D86.84
  • pyelonephritis and tubulo-interstitial nephritis in Sjogren syndrome M35.04
  • pyelonephritis and tubulo-interstitial nephritis in systemic lupus erythematosus M32.15
  • pyelonephritis and tubulo-interstitial nephritis in toxoplasmosis B58.83
  • renal tubular degeneration in diabetes E08 E13
  • syphilitic pyelonephritis and tubulo-interstitial nephritis A52.75

Code Edits

The Medicare Code Editor (MCE) detects and reports errors in the coding of claims data. The following ICD-10-CM Code Edits are applicable to this code:

  • Manifestation diagnoses - Manifestation codes describe the manifestation of an underlying disease, not the disease itself, and therefore should not be used as a principal diagnosis.

Convert N16 to ICD-9-CM

  • ICD-9-CM Code: 583.81 - Nephritis NOS in oth dis
Approximate Flag - The approximate mapping means there is not an exact match between the ICD-10 and ICD-9 codes and the mapped code is not a precise representation of the original code.
  • ICD-9-CM Code: 590.81 - Pyelonephrit in oth dis
Approximate Flag - The approximate mapping means there is not an exact match between the ICD-10 and ICD-9 codes and the mapped code is not a precise representation of the original code.

Kidney Diseases

You have two kidneys, each about the size of your fist. They are near the middle of your back, just below the rib cage. Inside each kidney there are about a million tiny structures called nephrons. They filter your blood. They remove wastes and extra water, which become urine. The urine flows through tubes called ureters. It goes to your bladder, which stores the urine until you go to the bathroom.

Most kidney diseases attack the nephrons. This damage may leave kidneys unable to remove wastes. Causes can include genetic problems, injuries, or medicines. You have a higher risk of kidney disease if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or a close family member with kidney disease. Chronic kidney disease damages the nephrons slowly over several years. Other kidney problems include:

  • Cancer
  • Cysts
  • Stones
  • Infections

Your doctor can do blood and urine tests to check if you have kidney disease. If your kidneys fail, you will need dialysis or a kidney transplant.

Footnotes

[1] Not chronic - A diagnosis code that does not fit the criteria for chronic condition (duration, ongoing medical treatment, and limitations) is considered not chronic. Some codes designated as not chronic are acute conditions. Other diagnosis codes that indicate a possible chronic condition, but for which the duration of the illness is not specified in the code description (i.e., we do not know the condition has lasted 12 months or longer) also are considered not chronic.
