2022 ICD-10-CM Code I48.19
Other persistent atrial fibrillation
Code Classification
I48.19 is a billable diagnosis code used to specify a medical diagnosis of other persistent atrial fibrillation. The code I48.19 is valid during the fiscal year 2022 from October 01, 2021 through September 30, 2022 for the submission of HIPAA-covered transactions.
The ICD-10-CM code I48.19 might also be used to specify conditions or terms like persistent atrial fibrillation.
The code is commonly used in cardiology medical specialties to specify clinical concepts such as atrial fibrillation and flutter.
The code I48.19 is linked to some Quality Measures as part of Medicare's Quality Payment Program (QPP). When this code is used as part of a patient's medical record the following Quality Measures might apply: Atrial Fibrillation And Atrial Flutter: Chronic Anticoagulation Therapy.
Tabular List of Diseases and Injuries
The Tabular List of Diseases and Injuries is a list of ICD-10 codes, organized "head to toe" into chapters and sections with coding notes and guidance for inclusions, exclusions, descriptions and more. The following references are applicable to the code I48.19:
Inclusion Terms
Inclusion TermsThese terms are the conditions for which that code is to be used. The terms may be synonyms of the code title, or, in the case of "other specified" codes, the terms are a list of the various conditions assigned to that code. The inclusion terms are not necessarily exhaustive. Additional terms found only in the Alphabetic Index may also be assigned to a code.
- Chronic persistent atrial fibrillation
- Persistent atrial fibrillation, NOS
Entries in the Index to Diseases and Injuries with references to I48.19
The Index to Diseases and Injuries is an alphabetical listing of medical terms, with each term mapped to one or more ICD-10 code(s). The following references for the code I48.19 are found in the index:
- - Fibrillation
- - atrial or auricular (established) - I48.91
- - chronic - I48.20
- - persistent - I48.19
- - persistent (chronic) (NOS) (other) - I48.19
- - chronic - I48.20
- - atrial or auricular (established) - I48.91
Approximate Synonyms
The following clinical terms are approximate synonyms or lay terms that might be used to identify the correct diagnosis code:
- Persistent atrial fibrillation
Clinical Information
- ATRIAL FIBRILLATION-. abnormal cardiac rhythm that is characterized by rapid uncoordinated firing of electrical impulses in the upper chambers of the heart heart atria. in such case blood cannot be effectively pumped into the lower chambers of the heart heart ventricles. it is caused by abnormal impulse generation.
Diagnostic Related Groups - MS-DRG Mapping
The ICD-10 code I48.19 is grouped in the following groups for version MS-DRG V39.0 What are Diagnostic Related Groups?
The Diagnostic Related Groups (DRGs) are a patient classification scheme which provides a means of relating the type of patients a hospital treats. The DRGs divides all possible principal diagnoses into mutually exclusive principal diagnosis areas referred to as Major Diagnostic Categories (MDC). applicable from 10/01/2021 through 09/30/2022.
MS-DRG | MS-DRG Title | MCD | Relative Weight |
---|---|---|---|
308 | CARDIAC ARRHYTHMIA AND CONDUCTION DISORDERS WITH MCC | 05 | 1.1993 |
309 | CARDIAC ARRHYTHMIA AND CONDUCTION DISORDERS WITH CC | 05 | 0.7494 |
310 | CARDIAC ARRHYTHMIA AND CONDUCTION DISORDERS WITHOUT CC/MCC | 05 | 0.5584 |
The relative weight of a diagnostic related group determines the reimbursement rate based on the severity of a patient's illness and the associated cost of care during hospitalization.
Replacement Code
I4819 replaces the following previously assigned ICD-10 code(s):
- I48.1 - Persistent atrial fibrillation
Quality Payment Program Measures
When code I48.19 is part of the patient's diagnoses the following Quality Measures apply and affect reimbursement. The objective of Medicare's Quality Measures is to improve patient care by making it more: effective, safe, efficient, patient-centered and equitable.
Quality Measure | Description | Quality Domain | Measure Type | High Priority | Submission Methods |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Atrial Fibrillation and Atrial Flutter: Chronic Anticoagulation Therapy | Percentage of patients aged 18 years and older with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (AF) or atrial flutter who were prescribed warfarin OR another FDA-approved oral anticoagulant drug for the prevention of thromboembolism during the measurement period. | Effective Clinical Care | Process | NO | Claims, Registry |
Information for Patients
Atrial Fibrillation
An arrhythmia is a problem with the speed or rhythm of the heartbeat. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common type of arrhythmia. The cause is a disorder in the heart's electrical system.
Often, people who have AF may not even feel symptoms. But you may feel
- Palpitations -- an abnormal rapid heartbeat
- Shortness of breath
- Weakness or difficulty exercising
- Chest pain
- Dizziness or fainting
- Fatigue
- Confusion
AF can lead to an increased risk of stroke. In many patients, it can also cause chest pain, heart attack, or heart failure.
Doctors diagnose AF using family and medical history, a physical exam, and a test called an electrocardiogram (EKG), which looks at the electrical waves your heart makes. Treatments include medicines and procedures to restore normal rhythm.
