About the M80–M85 Code Range
These disorders affect bone density or structure. They include osteoporosis, adult osteomalacia, fractures, and bone cysts.
M80 covers osteoporosis with a current pathological fracture; M81 covers osteoporosis without one. Their subdivisions distinguish age-related osteoporosis from other forms, and M81 also includes localized osteoporosis. M83 groups adult osteomalacia by named form or cause, including malabsorption, malnutrition, and drugs.
M84 groups disorders of bone continuity, distinguishing stress, pathological, and other nontraumatic fractures. Its pathological fracture subdivisions also distinguish the associated disease. M85 groups other bone density and structure disorders, including bone cysts and disorders of the skull.
For M80 and specified M84 fracture codes, a seventh character distinguishes initial encounters, subsequent encounters with routine or delayed healing, nonunion or malunion, and sequelae.
