M45 describes ankylosing spondylitis, a long-term inflammatory condition that causes joint pain and stiffness. Its subdivisions identify spinal regions or multiple sites; a separate subdivision identifies non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis. M46 groups other inflammatory conditions, including infection of a vertebra or spinal disc. M47 describes spondylosis, a degenerative condition of the spine, with subdivisions for compression syndromes and forms involving the spinal cord or nerve roots.
