Clinical Terms in This Code Range

Definitions from the National Library of Medicine for conditions coded in the G83 range.

Anterior Cord Syndrome

A syndrome caused by occlusion or injury to the anterior spinal artery. It is typically characterized by an abrupt onset of pain followed by bilateral motor deficits at or below the level of the lesion, and alterations of pain and temperature sensations a few dermatomal segments below the level of the lesion.

Brown-Sequard Syndrome

A syndrome associated with injury to the lateral half of the spinal cord. The condition is characterized by the following clinical features (which are found below the level of the lesion): contralateral hemisensory anesthesia to pain and temperature, ipsilateral loss of propioception, and ipsilateral motor paralysis. Tactile sensation is generally spared. (From Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed, p162).

Cauda Equina Syndrome

Compressive lesion affecting the nerve roots of the CAUDA EQUINA (e.g., compression, herniation, inflammation, rupture, or stenosis), which controls the function of the bladder and bowel. Symptoms may include neurological dysfunction of bladder or bowels, loss of sexual sensation and altered sensation or paralysis in the lower extremities.

Locked-In State

A rare neurologic disorder caused by an insult to the brainstem. It is characterized by quadriplegia, bulbar palsy, and sensory loss. However, level of consciousness, cognition, hearing, eye movements and blinking may be preserved.

Monoplegia

Paralysis that affects one limb.

Paralysis

A general term most often used to describe severe or complete loss of muscle strength due to motor system disease from the level of the cerebral cortex to the muscle fiber. This term may also occasionally refer to a loss of sensory function. (From Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed, p45)

Posterior Cord Syndrome

A syndrome caused by insult to the posterior columns of the spinal cord and resulting in impairments of proprioception, vibration, and fine touch. Typical presenting signs and symptoms may include sensory ataxia, dizziness, unsteady gait, and frequent falls.

Todd's Paralysis

A neurological condition experienced by individuals with epilepsy, in which a seizure is followed by a brief period of temporary paralysis.

About the G83 Code Range

These paralytic syndromes include paralysis affecting the upper limbs or a single limb, as well as named syndromes.

G83.0 identifies diplegia of the upper limbs. Monoplegia, paralysis of one limb, is divided into lower limb (G83.1), upper limb (G83.2) and unspecified limb (G83.3). Each of these groups separates right from left, dominant from nondominant, and specified from unspecified side.

Other subdivisions identify named syndromes under G83.4, G83.5 and G83.8. G83.9 identifies an unspecified paralytic syndrome.

Questions About This Page

How many billable codes are in the G83 range?

Of the 29 codes in this range, 24 are billable and valid for claim submission from October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027. Category header codes group them but cannot be reported on claims.

What does the G83 range classify?

The range classifies other paralytic syndromes. Each code links to its own reference page with billing status, MS-DRG grouping, coding notes, and clinical information.
