Type 2 Excludes

A type 2 excludes note represents "Not included here". An excludes2 note indicates that the condition excluded is not part of the condition represented by the code, but a patient may have both conditions at the same time. When an Excludes2 note appears under a code, it is acceptable to use both the code and the excluded code together, when appropriate.

Clinical Terms in This Code Range

Definitions from the National Library of Medicine for conditions coded in the P29 range.

Persistent Fetal Circulation Syndrome

A syndrome of persistent PULMONARY HYPERTENSION in the newborn infant (INFANT, NEWBORN) without demonstrable HEART DISEASES. This neonatal condition can be caused by severe pulmonary vasoconstriction (reactive type), hypertrophy of pulmonary arterial muscle (hypertrophic type), or abnormally developed pulmonary arterioles (hypoplastic type). The newborn patient exhibits CYANOSIS and ACIDOSIS due to the persistence of fetal circulatory pattern of right-to-left shunting of blood through a patent ductus arteriosus (DUCTUS ARTERIOSUS, PATENT) and at times a patent foramen ovale (FORAMEN OVALE, PATENT).

About the P29 Code Range

These heart and blood vessel conditions begin around birth. They include heart failure, heart rhythm problems, and high blood pressure in newborns.

The subdivisions separate P29.0 for heart failure, P29.1 for heart rhythm problems, and P29.2 for high blood pressure. Heart rhythm problems split into a fast heartbeat under P29.11 and a slow heartbeat under P29.12. P29.3 groups persistent fetal circulation, separating pulmonary hypertension of the newborn from other forms. P29.4 describes temporarily reduced blood flow to the newborn’s heart muscle. Other conditions under P29.8 separate cardiac arrest from other disorders; P29.9 leaves the cardiovascular disorder unspecified.
