Other disorders of muscle (M62) ICD-10-CM

The M62 code range covers other disorders of muscle with 175 ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes. 131 of them are billable and valid for claim submission in fiscal year 2026, and the category headers group them but cannot themselves be billed.

Type 1 Excludes

A type 1 excludes note is a pure excludes note. It means "NOT CODED HERE!" An Excludes1 note indicates that the code excluded should never be used at the same time as the code above the Excludes1 note. An Excludes1 is used when two conditions cannot occur together, such as a congenital form versus an acquired form of the same condition.

Type 2 Excludes

A type 2 excludes note represents "Not included here". An excludes2 note indicates that the condition excluded is not part of the condition represented by the code, but a patient may have both conditions at the same time. When an Excludes2 note appears under a code, it is acceptable to use both the code and the excluded code together, when appropriate.

Clinical Terms in This Code Range

Definitions from the National Library of Medicine for conditions coded in the M62 range.

Asthenia

Clinical sign or symptom manifested as debility, or lack or loss of strength and energy.

Dropped Head Syndrome

Condition characterized by sagging of the head due to severe NECK MUSCLES weakness in the back of the neck. It may result in severe cervical KYPHOSIS called chin-on-chest deformity. Dropped head syndrome is most often associated with other diseases, e.g., PARKINSON'S DISEASE; STROKES; HEAD AND NECK CANCER; and ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS.

Muscle Fatigue

A state arrived at through prolonged and strong contraction of a muscle. Studies in athletes during prolonged submaximal exercise have shown that muscle fatigue increases in almost direct proportion to the rate of muscle glycogen depletion. Muscle fatigue in short-term maximal exercise is associated with oxygen lack and an increased level of blood and muscle lactic acid, and an accompanying increase in hydrogen-ion concentration in the exercised muscle.

Muscle Weakness

A vague complaint of debility, fatigue, or exhaustion attributable to weakness of various muscles. The weakness can be characterized as subacute or chronic, often progressive, and is a manifestation of many muscle and neuromuscular diseases. (From Wyngaarden et al., Cecil Textbook of Medicine, 19th ed, p2251)

Myoglobinuria

The presence of MYOGLOBIN in URINE usually as a result of rhabdomyolysis.

Myotonia

Prolonged failure of muscle relaxation after contraction. This may occur after voluntary contractions, muscle percussion, or electrical stimulation of the muscle. Myotonia is a characteristic feature of MYOTONIC DISORDERS.

Myotonia Congenita

Inherited myotonic disorders with early childhood onset MYOTONIA. Muscular hypertrophy is common and myotonia may impair ambulation and other movements. It is classified as Thomsen (autosomal dominant) or Becker (autosomal recessive) generalized myotonia mainly based on the inheritance pattern. Becker type is also clinically more severe. An autosomal dominant variant with milder symptoms and later onset is known as myotonia levior. Mutations in the voltage-dependent skeletal muscle chloride channel are associated with the disorders.

Myotonic Disorders

Diseases characterized by MYOTONIA, which may be inherited or acquired. Myotonia may be restricted to certain muscles (e.g., intrinsic hand muscles) or occur as a generalized condition.

Myotonic Dystrophy

Neuromuscular disorder characterized by PROGRESSIVE MUSCULAR ATROPHY; MYOTONIA, and various multisystem atrophies. Mild INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY may also occur. Abnormal TRINUCLEOTIDE REPEAT EXPANSION in the 3' UNTRANSLATED REGIONS of DMPK PROTEIN gene is associated with Myotonic Dystrophy 1. DNA REPEAT EXPANSION of zinc finger protein-9 gene intron is associated with Myotonic Dystrophy 2.

Neurocirculatory Asthenia

A clinical syndrome characterized by palpitation, SHORTNESS OF BREATH, labored breathing, subjective complaints of effort and discomfort, all following slight PHYSICAL EXERTION. Other symptoms may be DIZZINESS, tremulousness, SWEATING, and INSOMNIA. Neurocirculatory asthenia is most typically seen as a form of anxiety disorder.

Osteochondrodysplasias

Abnormal development of cartilage and bone.

Rhabdomyolysis

Necrosis or disintegration of skeletal muscle often followed by myoglobinuria.

Sarcopenia

Progressive decline in muscle mass due to aging which results in decreased functional capacity of muscles.

About the M62 Code Range

The M62 category covers specific muscle disorders not classified elsewhere, including nontraumatic muscle separation, rupture, ischemic infarction, contractures, wasting, and other specified muscle conditions. These ICD-10 codes serve to pinpoint the exact muscle condition and its location, aiding accurate diagnosis and treatment documentation.

The ICD-10 code for separation of muscle (M62.0), also known as diastasis of muscle, identifies nontraumatic muscle splits, with subcodes specifying affected areas such as shoulders or upper arms. Similarly, codes beginning with M62.1 describe nontraumatic muscle rupture, including injuries like long head of biceps rupture. M62.2 captures nontraumatic ischemic infarction of muscle, signaling muscle damage due to insufficient blood supply. Contractures, or sustained muscle tightening, fall under M62.4, with detailed codes covering different body regions and conditions such as tendon contracture. Muscle wasting and atrophy, frequently linked to disuse or systemic illness, are encoded at M62.5, often used when the site and cause are unspecified. Additionally, M62.81 defines generalized muscle weakness, while M62.82 indicates rhabdomyolysis, a serious muscle breakdown condition. This section also includes muscle spasms (M62.83), sarcopenia (M62.84), and various other muscle abnormalities (M62.8), all important for precisely coding complex muscle disorders.

Questions About This Page

How many billable codes are in the M62 range?

Of the 175 codes in this range, 131 are billable and valid for claim submission from October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026. Category header codes group them but cannot be reported on claims.

What does the M62 range classify?

The range classifies other disorders of muscle. Each code links to its own reference page with billing status, MS-DRG grouping, coding notes, and clinical information.
