Includes

This note appears immediately under a three character code title to further define, or give examples of, the content of the category.

Type 1 Excludes

A type 1 excludes note is a pure excludes note. It means "NOT CODED HERE!" An Excludes1 note indicates that the code excluded should never be used at the same time as the code above the Excludes1 note. An Excludes1 is used when two conditions cannot occur together, such as a congenital form versus an acquired form of the same condition.

Meningitis

Inflammation of the coverings of the brain and/or spinal cord, which consist of the PIA MATER; ARACHNOID; and DURA MATER. Infections (viral, bacterial, and fungal) are the most common causes of this condition, but subarachnoid hemorrhage (HEMORRHAGES, SUBARACHNOID), chemical irritation (chemical MENINGITIS), granulomatous conditions, neoplastic conditions (CARCINOMATOUS MENINGITIS), and other inflammatory conditions may produce this syndrome. About the G03 Code Range

Meningitis appears here among inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system when its cause is listed as other or unspecified.

The subdivisions distinguish nonpyogenic meningitis, meaning meningitis that does not produce pus, in G03.0; chronic meningitis in G03.1; and benign recurrent meningitis in G03.2. They also separate other specified causes in G03.8 from unspecified meningitis in G03.9.
