Cysticercosis (B69)

The ICD-10 code B69 and its subcategories are designated for identifying and documenting different forms of cysticercosis, a parasitic infection caused by larval cysts of tapeworms. These codes help specify the infection based on its location in the body, crucial for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Cysticercosis primarily affects various tissues, and the ICD-10 code for cysticercosis includes localized forms such as B69.0 for central nervous system involvement (also known as cerebral cysticercosis or cysticercosis myelitis), which can cause neurological symptoms like dementia. The code B69.1 is assigned when the cysticercosis affects the eye. Other specific sites are covered under B69.8, while muscle involvement; also called cestode myositis or parasitic myositis; is coded as B69.81. Skin manifestations are included in B69.89, reflecting dermatosis caused by tapeworm larvae. In cases where the site is not specified, B69.9 is used. Using these codes helps healthcare providers clearly identify the location and impact of cysticercosis for effective management and epidemiological tracking.

Clinical Terms

The following clinical terms provide additional context, helping users better understand the clinical background and common associations for each diagnosis listed in this section. Including related terms alongside ICD-10-CM codes supports coders, billers, and healthcare professionals in improving accuracy, enhancing documentation, and facilitating research or patient education.

Cysticercosis

Infection with CYSTICERCUS, the larval form of the various tapeworms of the genus Taenia (usually T. solium in man). In humans they penetrate the intestinal wall and invade subcutaneous tissue, brain, eye, muscle, heart, liver, lung, and peritoneum. Brain involvement results in NEUROCYSTICERCOSIS.

Neurocysticercosis

Infection of the brain, spinal cord, or perimeningeal structures with the larval forms of the genus TAENIA (primarily T. solium in humans). Lesions formed by the organism are referred to as cysticerci. The infection may be subacute or chronic, and the severity of symptoms depends on the severity of the host immune response and the location and number of lesions. SEIZURES represent the most common clinical manifestation although focal neurologic deficits may occur. (From Joynt, Clinical Neurology, 1998, Ch27, pp46-50)
