Adverse effects, not elsewhere classified (T78)

Browse all the diagnosis codes used for adverse effects, not elsewhere classified (t78). For easy navigation, the diagnosis codes are sorted in alphabetical order and grouped by sections. Each section is clearly marked with its description, and the corresponding three-digit code range. This format makes it simple to browse diagnosis codes in this chapter or section and find what you're looking for. We've also added green checkmark icons to label billable codes, and red warning icons for non-billable ones. This makes it easy to identify which codes can be billed.

Clinical Information

Anaphylaxis - An acute hypersensitivity reaction due to exposure to a previously encountered ANTIGEN. The reaction may include rapidly progressing URTICARIA, respiratory distress, vascular collapse, systemic SHOCK, and death.

Angioedema - Swelling involving the deep DERMIS, subcutaneous, or submucosal tissues, representing localized EDEMA. Angioedema often occurs in the face, lips, tongue, and larynx.

Angioedemas, Hereditary - Inherited disorders that are characterized by subcutaneous and submucosal EDEMA in the upper RESPIRATORY TRACT and GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT.

Exercise-Induced Allergies - Allergic reactions following a period of exercise. Elevated serum HISTAMINE and TRYPTASE levels and cutaneous MAST CELL degranulation are often associated with post-exertional allergic reactions which sometimes are triggered only in combination with prior consumption of a specific food such as wheat. Allergic symptoms produced post-exercise range from skin eruption, asthma, bronchospasm, and anaphylaxis.

Hereditary Angioedema Type III - A form of hereditary angioedema that occurs in women and is precipitated or worsened by high ESTROGEN levels. It is associated with mutations in the gene for FACTOR XII that result in its increased activity.

Hereditary Angioedema Types I and II - Forms of hereditary angioedema that occur due to mutations in the gene for COMPLEMENT C1 INHIBITOR PROTEIN. Type I hereditary angioedema is associated with reduced serum levels of complement C1 inhibitor protein. Type II hereditary angioedema is associated with the production of a non-functional complement C1 inhibitor protein.

Histamine Release - The secretion of histamine from mast cell and basophil granules by exocytosis. This can be initiated by a number of factors, all of which involve binding of IgE, cross-linked by antigen, to the mast cell or basophil's Fc receptors. Once released, histamine binds to a number of different target cell receptors and exerts a wide variety of effects.

Passive Cutaneous Anaphylaxis - An evanescent cutaneous reaction occurring when antibody is injected into a local area on the skin and antigen is subsequently injected intravenously along with a dye. The dye makes the rapidly occurring capillary dilatation and increased vascular permeability readily visible by leakage into the reaction site. PCA is a sensitive reaction for detecting very small quantities of antibodies and is also a method for studying the mechanisms of immediate hypersensitivity.

Venom Hypersensitivity - Allergic reaction to venoms in insect bites and stings that is triggered by the immune system (i.e., HISTAMINE RELEASE).

Instructional Notations

Type 2 Excludes

A type 2 excludes note represents "Not included here". An excludes2 note indicates that the condition excluded is not part of the condition represented by the code, but a patient may have both conditions at the same time. When an Excludes2 note appears under a code, it is acceptable to use both the code and the excluded code together, when appropriate.

7th Character Note

Certain ICD-10-CM categories have applicable 7th characters. The applicable 7th character is required for all codes within the category, or as the notes in the Tabular List instruct. The 7th character must always be the 7th character in the data field. If a code that requires a 7th character is not 6 characters, a placeholder X must be used to fill in the empty characters.

  • The appropriate 7th character is to be added to each code from category T78

7th Character

Indicates that a seventh character is to be assigned to codes in a subcategory.
