2022 ICD-10-CM Code T83.090A
Other mechanical complication of cystostomy catheter, initial encounter
Code Classification
T83.090A is a billable diagnosis code used to specify a medical diagnosis of other mechanical complication of cystostomy catheter, initial encounter. The code T83.090A is valid during the fiscal year 2022 from October 01, 2021 through September 30, 2022 for the submission of HIPAA-covered transactions.
The ICD-10-CM code T83.090A might also be used to specify conditions or terms like disorder of cystostomy catheter or mechanical complication of cystostomy catheter.
T83.090A is an initial encounter code, includes a 7th character and should be used while the patient is receiving active treatment for a condition like other mechanical complication of cystostomy catheter. According to ICD-10-CM Guidelines an "initial encounter" doesn't necessarily means "initial visit". The 7th character should be used when the patient is undergoing active treatment regardless if new or different providers saw the patient over the course of a treatment. The appropriate 7th character codes should also be used even if the patient delayed seeking treatment for a condition.
Coding Guidelines
The appropriate 7th character is to be added to each code from block Complications of genitourinary prosth dev/grft (T83). Use the following options for the aplicable episode of care:
- A - initial encounter
- D - subsequent encounter
- S - sequela
Approximate Synonyms
The following clinical terms are approximate synonyms or lay terms that might be used to identify the correct diagnosis code:

Diagnostic Related Groups - MS-DRG Mapping
The ICD-10 code T83.090A is grouped in the following groups for version MS-DRG V39.0 What are Diagnostic Related Groups?
The Diagnostic Related Groups (DRGs) are a patient classification scheme which provides a means of relating the type of patients a hospital treats. The DRGs divides all possible principal diagnoses into mutually exclusive principal diagnosis areas referred to as Major Diagnostic Categories (MDC). applicable from 10/01/2021 through 09/30/2022.
MS-DRG | MS-DRG Title | MCD | Relative Weight |
---|---|---|---|
698 | OTHER KIDNEY AND URINARY TRACT DIAGNOSES WITH MCC | 11 | 1.6067 |
699 | OTHER KIDNEY AND URINARY TRACT DIAGNOSES WITH CC | 11 | 1.0252 |
700 | OTHER KIDNEY AND URINARY TRACT DIAGNOSES WITHOUT CC/MCC | 11 | 0.7448 |
The relative weight of a diagnostic related group determines the reimbursement rate based on the severity of a patient's illness and the associated cost of care during hospitalization.
Convert T83.090A to ICD-9 Code

Information for Patients
Ostomy
An ostomy is surgery to create an opening (stoma) from an area inside the body to the outside. It treats certain diseases of the digestive or urinary systems. It can be permanent, when an organ must be removed. It can be temporary, when the organ needs time to heal. The organ could be the small intestine, colon, rectum, or bladder. With an ostomy, there must be a new way for wastes to leave the body.
There are many different types of ostomy. Some examples are
- Ileostomy - the bottom of the small intestine (ileum) is attached to the stoma. This bypasses the colon, rectum and anus.
- Colostomy - the colon is attached to the stoma. This bypasses the rectum and the anus.
- Urostomy - the tubes that carry urine to the bladder are attached to the stoma. This bypasses the bladder.

Urine and Urination
Your kidneys make urine by filtering wastes and extra water from your blood. The waste is called urea. Your blood carries it to the kidneys. From the kidneys, urine travels down two thin tubes called ureters to the bladder. The bladder stores urine until you are ready to urinate. It swells into a round shape when it is full and gets smaller when empty. If your urinary system is healthy, your bladder can hold up to 16 ounces (2 cups) of urine comfortably for 2 to 5 hours.
You may have problems with urination if you have
- Kidney failure
- Urinary tract infections
- An enlarged prostate
- Bladder control problems like incontinence, overactive bladder, or interstitial cystitis
- A blockage that prevents you from emptying your bladder
Some conditions may also cause you to have blood or protein in your urine. If you have a urinary problem, see your health care provider. Urinalysis and other urine tests can help to diagnose the problem. Treatment depends on the cause.
