Code Classification

  • Diseases of the circulatory system
    (I00–I99)
    • Diseases of veins, lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes, not elsewhere classified
      (I80-I89)
      • Other disorders of veins
        (I87)

I87.0 is a non-specific and non-billable diagnosis code code, consider using a code with a higher level of specificity for a diagnosis of postthrombotic syndrome. The code is not specific and is NOT valid for the year 2024 for the submission of HIPAA-covered transactions. Category or Header define the heading of a category of codes that may be further subdivided by the use of 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th characters.

Specific Coding Applicable to Postthrombotic syndrome

Non-specific codes like I87.0 require more digits to indicate the appropriate level of specificity. Consider using any of the following ICD-10-CM codes with a higher level of specificity when coding for postthrombotic syndrome:

  • I87.00 for Postthrombotic syndrome without complications - NON-BILLABLE CODE

  • Use I87.001 for Postthrombotic syndrome without complications of right lower extremity - BILLABLE CODE

  • Use I87.002 for Postthrombotic syndrome without complications of left lower extremity - BILLABLE CODE

  • Use I87.003 for Postthrombotic syndrome without complications of bilateral lower extremity - BILLABLE CODE

  • Use I87.009 for Postthrombotic syndrome without complications of unspecified extremity - BILLABLE CODE

  • I87.01 for Postthrombotic syndrome with ulcer - NON-BILLABLE CODE

  • Use I87.011 for Postthrombotic syndrome with ulcer of right lower extremity - BILLABLE CODE

  • Use I87.012 for Postthrombotic syndrome with ulcer of left lower extremity - BILLABLE CODE

  • Use I87.013 for Postthrombotic syndrome with ulcer of bilateral lower extremity - BILLABLE CODE

  • Use I87.019 for Postthrombotic syndrome with ulcer of unspecified lower extremity - BILLABLE CODE

  • I87.02 for Postthrombotic syndrome with inflammation - NON-BILLABLE CODE

Clinical Information

  • Postthrombotic Syndrome

a condition caused by one or more episodes of deep vein thrombosis, usually the blood clots are lodged in the legs. clinical features include edema; pain; aching; heaviness; and muscle cramp in the leg. when severe leg swelling leads to skin breakdown, it is called venous stasis ulcer.

Tabular List of Diseases and Injuries

The following annotation back-references are applicable to this diagnosis code. The Tabular List of Diseases and Injuries is a list of ICD-10-CM codes, organized "head to toe" into chapters and sections with coding notes and guidance for inclusions, exclusions, descriptions and more.

Inclusion Terms

Inclusion Terms
These terms are the conditions for which that code is to be used. The terms may be synonyms of the code title, or, in the case of "other specified" codes, the terms are a list of the various conditions assigned to that code. The inclusion terms are not necessarily exhaustive. Additional terms found only in the Alphabetic Index may also be assigned to a code.
  • Chronic venous hypertension due to deep vein thrombosis
  • Postphlebitic syndrome

Type 1 Excludes

Type 1 Excludes
A type 1 excludes note is a pure excludes note. It means "NOT CODED HERE!" An Excludes1 note indicates that the code excluded should never be used at the same time as the code above the Excludes1 note. An Excludes1 is used when two conditions cannot occur together, such as a congenital form versus an acquired form of the same condition.
  • chronic venous hypertension without deep vein thrombosis I87.3

Patient Education

Deep Vein Thrombosis

Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, is a blood clot that forms in a vein deep in the body. Most deep vein clots occur in the lower leg or thigh. If the vein swells, the condition is called thrombophlebitis. A deep vein thrombosis can break loose and cause a serious problem in the lung, called a pulmonary embolism.

Sitting still for a long time can make you more likely to get a DVT. Some medicines and disorders that increase your risk for blood clots can also lead to DVTs. Common symptoms are :

  • Warmth and tenderness over the vein
  • Pain or swelling in the part of the body affected
  • Skin redness

Treatment includes medicines to ease pain and inflammation, break up clots and keep new clots from forming. Keeping the affected area raised and applying moist heat can also help. If you are taking a long car or plane trip, take a break, walk or stretch your legs and drink plenty of liquids.
