2022 ICD-10-CM Code I63.5

Cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of cerebral arteries

Version 2021

Not Valid for Submission

ICD-10:I63.5
Short Description:Cerebral infrc due to unsp occls or stenosis of cerebral art
Long Description:Cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of cerebral arteries

Code Classification

  • Diseases of the circulatory system (I00–I99)
    • Cerebrovascular diseases (I60-I69)
      • Cerebral infarction (I63)

I63.5 is a non-specific and non-billable diagnosis code code, consider using a code with a higher level of specificity for a diagnosis of cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of cerebral arteries. The code is not specific and is NOT valid for the year 2022 for the submission of HIPAA-covered transactions. Category or Header define the heading of a category of codes that may be further subdivided by the use of 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th characters.

Unspecified diagnosis codes like I63.5 are acceptable when clinical information is unknown or not available about a particular condition. Although a more specific code is preferable, unspecified codes should be used when such codes most accurately reflect what is known about a patient's condition. Specific diagnosis codes should not be used if not supported by the patient's medical record.

Specific Coding for Cerebral infrc due to unsp occls or stenosis of cerebral art

Non-specific codes like I63.5 require more digits to indicate the appropriate level of specificity. Consider using any of the following ICD-10 codes with a higher level of specificity when coding for cerebral infrc due to unsp occls or stenosis of cerebral art:

  • BILLABLE CODE - Use I63.50 for Cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of unspecified cerebral artery
  • NON-BILLABLE CODE - I63.51 for Cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of middle cerebral artery
  • BILLABLE CODE - Use I63.511 for Cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of right middle cerebral artery
  • BILLABLE CODE - Use I63.512 for Cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of left middle cerebral artery
  • BILLABLE CODE - Use I63.513 for Cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of bilateral middle cerebral arteries
  • BILLABLE CODE - Use I63.519 for Cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of unspecified middle cerebral artery
  • NON-BILLABLE CODE - I63.52 for Cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of anterior cerebral artery
  • BILLABLE CODE - Use I63.521 for Cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of right anterior cerebral artery
  • BILLABLE CODE - Use I63.522 for Cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of left anterior cerebral artery
  • BILLABLE CODE - Use I63.523 for Cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of bilateral anterior cerebral arteries
  • BILLABLE CODE - Use I63.529 for Cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of unspecified anterior cerebral artery
  • NON-BILLABLE CODE - I63.53 for Cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of posterior cerebral artery
  • BILLABLE CODE - Use I63.531 for Cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of right posterior cerebral artery
  • BILLABLE CODE - Use I63.532 for Cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of left posterior cerebral artery
  • BILLABLE CODE - Use I63.533 for Cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of bilateral posterior cerebral arteries
  • BILLABLE CODE - Use I63.539 for Cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of unspecified posterior cerebral artery
  • NON-BILLABLE CODE - I63.54 for Cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of cerebellar artery
  • BILLABLE CODE - Use I63.541 for Cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of right cerebellar artery
  • BILLABLE CODE - Use I63.542 for Cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of left cerebellar artery
  • BILLABLE CODE - Use I63.543 for Cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of bilateral cerebellar arteries
  • BILLABLE CODE - Use I63.549 for Cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of unspecified cerebellar artery
  • BILLABLE CODE - Use I63.59 for Cerebral infarction due to unspecified occlusion or stenosis of other cerebral artery

Information for Patients

Ischemic Stroke

A stroke is a medical emergency. There are two types - ischemic and hemorrhagic. Ischemic stroke is the most common type. It is usually caused by a blood clot that blocks or plugs a blood vessel in the brain. This keeps blood from flowing to the brain. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die. Another cause is stenosis, or narrowing of the artery. This can happen because of atherosclerosis, a disease in which plaque builds up inside your arteries. Transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) occur when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted briefly. Having a TIA can mean you are at risk for having a more serious stroke.

Symptoms of stroke are

It is important to treat strokes as quickly as possible. Blood thinners may be used to stop a stroke while it is happening by quickly dissolving the blood clot. Post-stroke rehabilitation can help people overcome disabilities caused by stroke damage.
