D37.2 is a billable diagnosis code used to specify a medical diagnosis of neoplasm of uncertain behavior of small intestine. The code is valid during the current fiscal year for the submission of HIPAA-covered transactions from October 01, 2023 through September 30, 2024.

The following anatomical sites found in the Table of Neoplasms reference this diagnosis code given the correct histological behavior: Neoplasm, neoplastic duodenojejunal junction ; Neoplasm, neoplastic duodenum ; Neoplasm, neoplastic ileum ; Neoplasm, neoplastic intestine, intestinal small ; Neoplasm, neoplastic intestine, intestinal small duodenum ; Neoplasm, neoplastic intestine, intestinal small ileum ; Neoplasm, neoplastic intestine, intestinal small jejunum ; etc

Approximate Synonyms

The following clinical terms are approximate synonyms or lay terms that might be used to identify the correct diagnosis code:

  • Carcinoid tumor of ileum
  • Carcinoid tumor of small intestine
  • Gastrinoma
  • Gastrinoma of duodenum
  • Neoplasm of Meckel's diverticulum
  • Neoplasm of uncertain behavior of duodenum
  • Neoplasm of uncertain behavior of ileum
  • Neoplasm of uncertain behavior of jejunum
  • Neoplasm of uncertain behavior of Meckel's diverticulum
  • Neoplasm of uncertain behavior of small intestine
  • Neuroendocrine neoplasm of duodenum

Clinical Classification

Clinical Information

  • Duodenal Neoplasms

tumors or cancer of the duodenum.
  • Duodenum

the shortest and widest portion of the small intestine adjacent to the pylorus of the stomach. it is named for having the length equal to about the width of 12 fingers.
  • Jejunal Neoplasms

tumors or cancer in the jejunum region of the small intestine (intestine, small).
  • Jejunum

the middle portion of the small intestine, between duodenum and ileum. it represents about 2/5 of the remaining portion of the small intestine below duodenum.
  • Gastrinoma

a gastrin-secreting neuroendocrine tumor of the non-beta islet cells, the gastrin-secreting cells. this type of tumor is primarily located in the pancreas or the duodenum. majority of gastrinomas are malignant. they metastasize to the liver; lymph nodes; and bone but rarely elsewhere. the presence of gastrinoma is one of three requirements to be met for identification of zollinger-ellison syndrome, which sometimes occurs in families with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1; (men 1).

Convert D37.2 to ICD-9-CM

  • ICD-9-CM Code: 235.2 - Unc behav neo intestine
Approximate Flag - The approximate mapping means there is not an exact match between the ICD-10 and ICD-9 codes and the mapped code is not a precise representation of the original code.

Table of Neoplasms

This code is referenced in the table of neoplasms by anatomical site. For each site there are six possible code numbers according to whether the neoplasm in question is malignant, benign, in situ, of uncertain behavior, or of unspecified nature. The description of the neoplasm will often indicate which of the six columns is appropriate.

Where such descriptors are not present, the remainder of the Index should be consulted where guidance is given to the appropriate column for each morphological (histological) variety listed. However, the guidance in the Index can be overridden if one of the descriptors mentioned above is present.

Small Intestine Disorders

Your small intestine is the longest part of your digestive system - about twenty feet long! It connects your stomach to your large intestine (or colon) and folds many times to fit inside your abdomen. Your small intestine does most of the digesting of the foods you eat. It has three areas called the duodenum, the ileum, and the jejunum.

Problems with the small intestine can include:

  • Bleeding
  • Celiac disease
  • Crohn's disease
  • Infections
  • Intestinal cancer
  • Intestinal obstruction
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Ulcers, such as peptic ulcer

Treatment of disorders of the small intestine depends on the cause.

Footnotes

[1] Not chronic - A diagnosis code that does not fit the criteria for chronic condition (duration, ongoing medical treatment, and limitations) is considered not chronic. Some codes designated as not chronic are acute conditions. Other diagnosis codes that indicate a possible chronic condition, but for which the duration of the illness is not specified in the code description (i.e., we do not know the condition has lasted 12 months or longer) also are considered not chronic.
