D23.6 is a non-specific and non-billable diagnosis code code, consider using a code with a higher level of specificity for a diagnosis of other benign neoplasm of skin of upper limb, including shoulder. The code is not specific and is NOT valid for the year 2024 for the submission of HIPAA-covered transactions. Category or Header define the heading of a category of codes that may be further subdivided by the use of 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th characters.

The following anatomical sites found in the Table of Neoplasms reference this diagnosis code given the correct histological behavior: Neoplasm, neoplastic nail [See Also: Neoplasm, skin, limb] finger [See Also: Neoplasm, skin, limb, upper] ; Neoplasm, neoplastic skin NOS antecubital space [See Also: Neoplasm, skin, limb, upper] ; Neoplasm, neoplastic skin NOS arm [See Also: Neoplasm, skin, limb, upper] ; Neoplasm, neoplastic skin NOS elbow [See Also: Neoplasm, skin, limb, upper] ; Neoplasm, neoplastic skin NOS finger [See Also: Neoplasm, skin, limb, upper] ; Neoplasm, neoplastic skin NOS forearm [See Also: Neoplasm, skin, limb, upper] ; Neoplasm, neoplastic skin NOS hand [See Also: Neoplasm, skin, limb, upper] ; etc

Specific Coding Applicable to Oth benign neoplasm skin/ upper limb, including shoulder

Non-specific codes like D23.6 require more digits to indicate the appropriate level of specificity. Consider using any of the following ICD-10-CM codes with a higher level of specificity when coding for oth benign neoplasm skin/ upper limb, including shoulder:

  • Use D23.60 for Other benign neoplasm of skin of unspecified upper limb, including shoulder - BILLABLE CODE

  • Use D23.61 for Other benign neoplasm of skin of right upper limb, including shoulder - BILLABLE CODE

  • Use D23.62 for Other benign neoplasm of skin of left upper limb, including shoulder - BILLABLE CODE

Table of Neoplasms

This code is referenced in the table of neoplasms by anatomical site. For each site there are six possible code numbers according to whether the neoplasm in question is malignant, benign, in situ, of uncertain behavior, or of unspecified nature. The description of the neoplasm will often indicate which of the six columns is appropriate.

Where such descriptors are not present, the remainder of the Index should be consulted where guidance is given to the appropriate column for each morphological (histological) variety listed. However, the guidance in the Index can be overridden if one of the descriptors mentioned above is present.

Benign Tumors

Tumors are abnormal growths in your body. They can be either benign or malignant. Benign tumors aren't cancer. Malignant ones are. Benign tumors grow only in one place. They cannot spread or invade other parts of your body. Even so, they can be dangerous if they press on vital organs, such as your brain.

Tumors are made up of extra cells. Normally, cells grow and divide to form new cells as your body needs them. When cells grow old, they die, and new cells take their place. Sometimes, this process goes wrong. New cells form when your body does not need them, and old cells do not die when they should. These extra cells can divide without stopping and may form tumor.

Treatment often involves surgery. Benign tumors usually don't grow back.
